The Spirit of Giving

A spirit of giving at St. Brendan’s

The staff and students of St. Brendan’s College have had an extremely busy half term with regard to their Social Justice and fundraising programme. Firstly twenty members of staff engaged in the Movember Men’s Cancer Awareness Project and in the process raised €2638 for the Irish Cancer Society. Organiser Mr. Declan O’Donoghue was rich in his praise for his colleagues who participated but especially grateful to his own classes who contributed €400 of the total.

Meanwhile the school’s annual support of St. Vincent De Paul was in full swing during December. Firstly teacher Mr. Paul Barden initiated the whole school Food Appeal which is on-going. Each year the staff and students gather as much festive food as possible, package it in hampers and present it to SVDP. Any parents or members of the public who wish to contribute to the Food Appeal may do so through the College Office.

The traditional Sixth year Carol Service at St. Columbanus’ Home took place on Thursday 15th and was followed by the annual St. Brendan’s/St Brigid’s Christmas Carolothon at the Market Cross. Once more the organising teacher Mr. Paul Barden wishes to express a huge thanks to the members of the public who so willingly contributed to the efforts of the sixth years from both schools.

Finally the 6th year LCVP students of the College recently raised €480 for local charity Multiple Sclerosis.  The students organised a fundraising walk as part of their LCVP programme and in the last 3 years have raised in excess of €2000 for these charities through various enterprise activities.  The programme provides students with an awareness of the work carried out by local voluntary organisations and gives them the opportunity to use their entrepreneurial skills in setting up and running an enterprise activity.
