St. Brendan’s U15 Soccer

St. Brendan’s U15 Soccer       St. Brendan’s 3 -v- Tarbert C.S 0

Report by Gary Cronin (2nd Year)
The Under 15 soccer team played Tarbert CS away in the 2nd round of the Munster competition. St. Brendan’s started with two first years at centre back with Paul O Shea and Darragh Donohue. At right back making his debut
was Conor O Leary, left back Josh Fleming. The game was played on a very narrow pitch making it difficult for the Sem to use their wide men Mark Fennell and Michael Devlin. In the first half the Sem had a couple of opportunities but didn’t finish. Marc Kelliher made some wonderful saves and brilliant goal line clearance by Conor O Leary kept the score at 0 – 0. Darragh Lyne went close with a great free kick only for the keeper to touch it over the bar. In the second half the Sem made two substitutes in order to suit the narrow pitch. Peter O Sullivan came on for Fennell and Cian McCarthy for Darragh Lyne. The Sem reshaped with Dara Fleming and Patrick Darcy joining up in centre midfield. Both worked well together in controlling the tempo of the game in the second half but Tarbert’s midfield gave them a torrid time throughout the second half with their physical presence. Dylan Murphy up front was working hard for the team closing down the opposition and was unlucky not to score on a number of occasions. The Sem pushed forward in search of the opening goal with their defence gaining confidence with great work from Donohue and O Shea at centre back and O Leary and Josh at wing back. Peter O Sullivan struck a
fantastic volley goal bound but the Tarbert keeper made a fantastic save at full stretch. The game finished 0 – 0 at full time after great work from both teams to keep each other at bay. The breakthrough came early in the first half of extra time when Devlin sent a free kick into the top corner from
30 yards albeit with the aid of the wind but the Sem didn’t complain. Straight from the tip off the Sem won the ball back and a fantastic pass from the hard working Josh Fleming sent Devlin through 1v1 with the keeper, Devlin stayed calm and slotted the ball into the net to make it 2-0. Cian McCarthy was causing problems up front and eventually got a deserved goal when his used his chest to cleverly guide the ball past the keeper after great work on the wing by O Sullivan. In the second half of extra time St. Brendan’s closed the game out tightening up the defence and sending on fresh legs in Lee Downing on up front to chase down and hassle the defence with Tadgh Doolin coming on at left back for the injured Josh Fleming. Applause must be given to Tarbert who gave the Sem a tough game and never gave up until the final whistle. A lot of work must be done in order for the squad to progress with a difficult task against ST. Clements in the next round. Credit is due to all members of the squad, both those who played and those who had to sit it out , all were very well behaved and encouraging to their squad mates. A special thanks to Magda who prepared the kit for the team on the day.
The coaches were Joseph Hurley & Trevor Nagle
