SciFest competition held here last Friday 3rd March, 2017.

Friday, March 3rd: Approximately 30 students participated and exhibited 16 projects in SciFest@School in St.Brendan’s College, Killarney. This was the school’s fourth SciFest@School and the event was a huge success!

Students demonstrated their knowledge of science, technology, engineering and maths through their creative and innovative projects.

The overall prize went to Liam O’Brien and Michael O’Donoghue who completed an impressive project on farm safety. They designed a farm safety booklet which encompasses all the areas of risk on a farm. Furthermore they constructed a working prototype of an agitator powered by renewable energy sources including a wind turbine and solar panels.

Second prize was awarded to Isaac O’Rourke, Jack Muldarry and Colm Looney. These students carried out an investigation to determine why video games are so addictive. They looked at gaming habits and the effects gaming has on the brain.

Darragh Fleming and Cian McMahon finished in third place. This team examined different methods of deterring deer from entering certain areas particularly roadways. They have invented a number of devices which act as deer deterrents.

The prize for most innovative idea went to Jack Linehan for his project on revolutionary school bags which addresses the problems posed by heavy school bags.

The Health & Safety award went to Jason Emini and James O’Shaughnessy. These students have designed a novel rugby helmet using a cornflour substance as a shock absorber.

Rian Gill won the prize for most indepth research with his project on the Hubble Telescope.

The prize for best presentation went to Donnacha O’Donoghue who presented a considerable body of research on plant and animal cells.

Conor Dennehy won the astronomy award for his research on black holes.

All of the students have worked very hard on their projects and should be very proud of their achievements. We all wish the best of luck to the students going on to the next stage of the SciFest competition which will see them compete in SciFest@College in Tralee IT on May 9th.
