Sam Maguire and Tommy Markham visit St. Brendan’s College

sem cupsTommy Markham and Sam Maguire cups visited St Brendan’s College on Tuesday. It was the first time since 1980 that both cups were captured by Kerry in the same year. St Brendan’s college which has been a nursery for nurturing and developing young footballers with the skills, desire and education necessary to be a Kerry Star, was rightfully selected as the first school to be visited by the players on Tuesday.

St Brendan’s provided 12 members in total to both the victorious key minor team and Kerry senior teams. The Tommy Markham winning minor team included current pupils Micheal Burns, Liam Kearney, Gavin White and leaving certificate student from last year Jordan Kiely. Arthur Fitzgerald a member of the school teaching staff was involved as physical trainer of the team.

The senior Sam Maguire winning Kerry team was decorated with former St Brendan’s students of the school Brendan Kealy, Brian Kelly, Jonathan Lyne, Kieran O leary, Colm Cooper, Fionn Fitzgerald, James O Donoghue. Indeed it was a great moment for both past and present members of the St Brendan’s school community to witness Kerry captains Kerian O leary and Fionn Fitzgerald lift the Sam Maguire Cup on the steps of the Hogan Stand and bring it back to Kerry for the 37th time.

The wonderful ethos of St Brendan’s orientated on the belief that with hard work, guidance, and support, it is possible for everyone to achieve their maximum in all aspects of life. This was wonderfully on show in Croke Park on Sunday last. Everyone in St Brendans is proud of the schools involvement in Kerry being all senior champions for the 37th time and minor champions for the 12th time in G.A.A. history.
