Poetry Workshop

On Tuesday 13th January a second year and a third year Irish class had the opportunity to take part in writing workshops with Dairena Ní Chinnéide, a poet and author from Dingle. Part sponsored by Poetry Ireland, the Writers in Schools program offers the opportunity for students to have the unique experience of being tutored in writing by an experienced and published author.

Firstly, the students had to pick an object from the Random object bag and write a short poem, free verse or rhyming, about the item they had chosen. Then students were asked to write a short piece personifying a season of their choice. The final challenge was for students to write a creative explanation of any seanfhocal they had learned. Bhí said thar barr! Ms Ní Chinneide was impressed with the standard of interest and application shown by the 2nd years. MOl an óige agus tiocfaidh said!

Here is a sample of an abstract piece written by Dara Lawlor of second year –
Is lámh é,
Tá sé déanta as cloch,
Níl aon chorp ag an lámh,
Níl aon saol ag an lámh…………
