Model United Nations Conference 2017

On January 24th Fifteen students from St. Brendan’s travelled to Cork City Hall to participate in a four day Model United Nations (MUN) Conference. The MUN was introduced to Ireland four years ago. It is a simulation of the United Nations Assembly where each student is assigned a country to represent. The students debate global issues which affect our contemporary society such as the threat of ISIS, animal rights, nuclear power etc. The participants try to pass resolutions which might solve problems posed by these issues, exactly as officials in the UN do.

A total of 450 students took part from over 6 countries. 82 resolutions were submitted and 11 were chosen to be debated on. St. Brendan’s had three of its resolutions chosen for debate and all three were passed. The team from St. Brendan’s performed remarkably with three students winning awards. Harry Knoblauch was awarded ‘Best overall delegate’ of the Special Conference, Callum Myers was awarded ‘Revelation of the conference’ award and James Knoblauch was awarded ‘Best overall delegate’ of the general assembly. Well done to all!
