Ewan and Jordan make the cut

COME on you boys in green. Killarney basketball duo Ewan Weldon and Jordan Lee have made their mark on the Irish Under 15 http://www.killarneytoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Lee-+-Weldon-E-2.jpgdevelopment squad in no uncertain terms having been officially included on the international panel preparing for next year’s European Championships.

The great double dream was realised this week when they were formally notified that they had made the cut and they will now go into training for a series of glamour internationals and challenges in the build-up to the big event.

Ewan and Jordan, who are both aged 14, made their mark at the final trials in Dublin at the weekend and after a nailbiting 24 hours, the telephone eventually shrilled and the good news was broken to them.

The talented two, who both play on the Andrew Fitzgerald and PJ Lucey trained St Brendan’s College team, were carefully assessed by the international selection team who liked what they saw during the course of the weekend trials.

Jordan’s success story, of course, is the worst kept secret in sport given the national publicity he received for playing the game at a very high level despite having been born with just one arm.

For the towering forward Ewan, meanwhile, playing for Ireland is the realisation of a long-time ambition and he is maintaining a great family tradition on the indoor courts of Ireland.

The son of Mike and Hilda (nee Hurley), Ewan’s uncle James is a household name in basketball in this country, having played Superleague with Killarney for several years before becoming one of the most successful and respected coaches in the game.

James coached the UL ladies team to several major league and cup honours as well as spearheading the international campaign for the Irish Under 18 girls’ squad.

Ewan, a talented all-round sports enthusiast, is considered one of the best prospects to emerge in Irish basketball for a number of years and he puts his considerable height advantage to great use on the courts.
