Dignity Week 23rd to 27th September

Dignity and Respect week 2013

Fionnbar Walsh, father of the late Donal Walsh was the keynote speaker at the launch of Respect Week 2013.  Addressing each year group in turn, and bringing Donal to our students through the use of YouTube clips, Mr Walsh summarised the battle Donal fought with three bouts of cancer, explained the manner in which his ideas gained national prominence and finally emphasised the key elements of his son’s message. Donal became frustrated with his awareness of the prevalence of suicide as an option in the lives of teenagers and young adults. As a teenager who fought bravely to hold onto life, Donal believed that no young person should ever feel that suicide could offer a solution. Donal lost his fight for life in May 2013 – but now his mother and father Alma and Fionnbar continue the delivery of this message.  Be it through the Donal Walsh Livelife website, YouTube videos, the documentary currently in production or through speaking engagements, Donal’s belief in living life to the full and in the importance of reaching out if feeling low, will not be forgotten.

Fionnbarr Walsh with StudentsMr. Walsh’s matter-of-fact delivery impacted hugely on the students of St. Brendan’s. His son’s message began as advice to his friends in C.B.S. the Green, in Tralee but has now resonated with an international audience. Sixth year students made a presentation to Mr. Walsh to mark the occasion.

Dignity Week allows our students the opportunity to work with a variety of visiting speakers, workshops and activities which emphasise self-respect, the importance of the spiritual, engagement with community and the environment in leading a balanced life based on the dignity of the self and those around us.  Supported by counsellor Michael Gleason, South West Counselling,  Stress & Breathing Coach,  Eoin Burns, Killarney Gardai, Kerry mental health, Cappanalea Outdoor Education Centre. The Samaritans and Jigsaw, the week offers an eclectic mix for our students. Guidance counsellor Karen Rice believes that weeks such as this cause the whole school to be more reflective, more aware of themselves and each other. This reflective mind set impacts positively on the whole life of the school.

Principal Sean Coffey thanked the organisations and individuals and members of the Parents’ Association who gave so much time and energy to ensure students had the opportunities encapsulated in these workshops. With staff engagement in the holistic development of our students the quality of the relationships in the school continue to be enhanced
