Class of 1963 – 50 Year Reunion

50 Year Reunion

On Friday last the staff of St. Brendan’s had the privilege of welcoming back the students from the Leaving certificate class of 1963. Organised by class members Tony Behan, Jim O’Sullivan, Ted Horan & John Dwyer the group gathered to rekindle past friendships, to renew links with their alma mater but most especially to remember those class members no longer with us. In all 16 of the class have passed away. The mass which began proceedings served to remember those now past, was also a celebration and a thanksgiving for all present or represented in the chapel. Mass was concelebrated by Canon Jim Linnane and Canon Pat Horgan, both teachers of the 1963 class. They were joined by Fr. Michael Fleming and Fr Michael O’ Dochertaigh.

Formal proceedings quickly gave way to the much anticipated tea and talk in the college refectory as friendships spanning a half century were renewed. The energy and good natured banter was a joy to behold.

The evening also recognised the achievement of the Senior Football team of 1963 who won the Corn ui Mhuiri that year and were narrowly defeated in the Hogan Cup final. Current school principal Sean Coffey in welcoming the group noted the symmetry of the occasion as the previous evening the 2013 class had gathered to attend their going forth from second level at their Debs Ball.

The revelry transferred to the Malton Hotel where the class reminiscences continued over a gala dinner.

With a very successful 1962 class reunion and the 1988 Basketball Reunion so recently and successfully orchestrated plans are now afoot for an official re-launch of Past Pupils Union.
