Cheltenham at “The Sem”

Cheltenham at ‘The Sem’

Students from St Brendan’s College Killarney came up with a novel idea recently to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.  Named ‘Cheltenham at the Sem’, the event involved senior pupils acting as  horses while some first and second year pupils acted as their jockeys in a race around a carefully constructed track in the school pitches. Each of the ‘horses and jockeys’ raised money by way of sponsorship and the teachers in the school also became involved by becoming ‘owners’.  In excess of 350 pupils attended the event which saw  over 40 participants vying for the prize. Sixth year David Osterloh and first year Brendan Coppinger were the winning partnership on the day which saw €1015 raised for the Irish Cancer Society. Organising teacher Declan O’Donoghue said that he felt it was further evidence of the ingenuity, good will and social awareness of our boys. He complimented all for their endeavour in this worthwhile event, stating that he believed it had achieved “annual” status on the school calendar!
