Return of Pio Fitzgerald

Pio Fitzgerald’s visit to St. Brendan’s College

On Friday, 10th October, 2012 the Sem welcomed back one of its high achieving Alumni, Pio Fitzgerald.  Earlier this year Pio had received the highest Engineering Accolade that his company Boeing International could bestow, that of “Boeing’s Commercial Airplanes Engineer of the Year”.  Pio, heading up a team of engineers, solved a major wing vibration problem that would have led to a whole new design of the Boeing 747-8 airliner costing hundreds of millions of Euro in redesign, lost orders and delays.  Pio spoke to assembled 5th & 6th years.

Pio and his three brothers all received their post primary education at St. Brendan’s.  From an early age, Pio developed an interest in flight.  By the age of sixteen he had earned his Pilot’s licence while still at school.  Pio told the attentive audience that life in school wasn’t always easy for him but that he knew that to achieve his goals he would have to work extra hard at certain subjects. “ To be successful one must be passionate about what you do, be prepared to work hard and stick to the task at hand until you master it.”  Pio also suggested that students should be kind to each other and that kind acts are remembered much longer than the opposite.

Retired teachers  Mr. Eoin Ó Carra (Physics) and Mr. Billy Condon (Chemistry & Maths) added their words of congratulations to those of Mr. Sean Coffey, Principal and Mr. Jim O’Brien, Deputy.

Afterwards, Andrew Byrnes & Kevin Keane made a presentation to Dr. Pio to mark his return to St. Brendan’s College.

Following his time at St. Brendan’s Pio did his primary degree in UL followed by his Masters in Bristol University.  He completed his Doctorate at Cranfield University.
